The past few weeks I’ve been obsessing over Scrivener templates. When I first started using Scrivener, templates interested me, but I hadn’t given them much thought. However, the more I use the templates ( I even created one of my own), the more I see how useful they can be. I can’t wait to create more!

How to Create Scrivener Templates (and Why You Should)
Why Should You Use Scrivener Templates
A template is a document that you create once and use or modify repeatedly without changing the original document. Templates are a great way to save time. Rather than creating a document over and over, you can create a template. They are also great for organizing information that is relevant to your novel but not part of your novel. Stuff like character profile sheets or story arcs.
I’ve been using templates in my current YA Romance WIP and they are so helpful. I use the ones Scrivener included with a few adjustments and additions. The ones included are good, but not amazing. But you can make it whatever you want or make your own. I also made one to record basic information for each scene. Characters involved, a summary of plot, purpose for the scene, etc. It could be used for each chapter, but I find smaller bits of information easier to digest. I’ve included the template for download as a word document (in case you don’t use Scrivener). If you do use Scrivener, simply download the word document and import it into Scrivener.

How to Create a Scrivener Template
All Scrivener templates are kept in the same folder so that Scrivener knows to treat them as templates. Scrivener Fiction projects include templates for setting and character. So if you choose the fiction project when you get started, you’ll already have a templates folder and two templates. If you choose a different project or import a file, you’ll need to create your own.
You can create a file and add documents and then turn it into your templates folder, or you can create a folder and add templates later. This is a good option if you aren’t sure what templates you want to create yet. To turn your folder into your templates folder simply click on the folder and then go to Project —> Set Selection As Templates Folder.
Then pick whatever folder you want to add a template to and go to Project —> New From Template to add the appropriate template from your templates folder.
